What are the Three Primary Periodontal Surgical Procedures?

What are the Three Primary Periodontal Surgical Procedures?Periodontal disease is a severe oral condition that can lead to tooth loss. Even though this condition cannot be reversed, several surgical procedures help fix it. There are three primary surgical procedures that we apply to treat periodontal disease for oral and dental health.

Gingival Flap Surgery

This is the first and most common periodontal surgical procedure. It is also referred to as gum lift surgery. This procedure involves realigning gums to improve your smile. Gum lift surgery involves gingivectomy and gingivoplasty. These two subdivisions of gum lift surgery are often used interchangeably as they are almost the same. However, they have different objectives. For instance, gingivoplasty involves realigning the gum tissues to get rid of infected soft tissues inside the periodontal pockets. This helps treat the infection.

Mucogingival Surgery

This is a more complex and sophisticated type of periodontal surgery. We often use this type of surgery to treat advanced gum disease, especially when exposed tooth roots need cover. Besides, this surgical procedure can also be used on removable denture wearers to control damage caused by periodontitis.

Osseous Surgery

This is the third and least common type of periodontal surgery. Like mucogingival surgery, osseous surgery is mainly used to treat advanced periodontal disease. This procedure focuses on managing the destruction caused by gum disease. It involves the manipulation of bone tissues — reshaping them to limit the damage caused by the condition. Even though it is the least common type of periodontal surgery, it helps restore your smile and oral health. Before undergoing this procedure, we make sure that you have sufficient gum tissues that can sustain its effects. Patients with minimal gum tissues are not good candidates for this surgical procedure. Schedule a consultative appointment with us for more information on periodontal surgical procedures.
