Dental Implants Procedure

Posted on 4/24/2023 by Pine Belt Periodontics
Dental Implants ProcedureDental implants are some of the best alternatives to natural teeth for people with damaged or missing teeth. Dental implants are screws that are supposed to be artificial roots. They are fastened to the jawbone to support an artificial tooth. They are made of hard materials like titanium or ceramic. Dental implants are designed to look and serve the same function as natural teeth. They are a great alternative to dentures as they are long-lasting and easy to maintain. To install dental implants, a patient will go through several stages.

Consultation and Planning

The first step in getting dental implants is usually a dental examination. In this stage, your dentist will examine your teeth and the supporting structures like the gums and the jawbone. This is done to determine if your gums and jawbone are in good condition. Since severe periodontitis can destroy these structures, your dentist might recommend a bone or soft tissue graft before installing dental implants. Once the dentist determines that you are a candidate, a treatment plan is prepared.

Placement of the Implant and the Abutment.

Placement of the implant begins with the surgical installation of the titanium post into the jawbone. This post provides a stable foundation on which the abutment can be placed. After the procedure, it takes several months for the implant to heal and bond with the bone tissue. The abutment is placed on the implant only after complete healing. An abutment is a connector piece that serves as the foundation for the replacement tooth.

Restoration Placement

This is the final step in the dental implant surgical procedure. A dental crown or bridge is attached to the abutment. This dental crown is prepared to resemble the rest of the teeth in shape, color, and size to give you a healthy natural looking smile.
